About the event
In this lecture, we will trace the development of atomic theory through the early 20th century. We begin with Einstein’s explanation of Brownian motion, one of the first convincing pieces of evidence for the existence of molecules and atoms. From there, we will look at the periodic table through the lens of chemistry, discuss Niels Bohr’s model of the atom and how electron transitions relates to Planck’s quantization and Einstein’s insights on photons. We will end by discussing orbitals and the quantum theory of the atom.
Rather than a popular-science story, this lecture is structured as a genuine introduction to the reasoning, evidence, and models that shaped our modern understanding of atoms. It is designed for curious learners who want to see not just what science says, but why it makes sense.
